CHAPTER 14

JULIA

Collapsing into the luxury of her bedroom’s armchair, Julia couldn’t shake off the cold, uncomfortable sterility of the police station’s waiting room she’d left just one hour earlier.

Her entire body ached, a physical manifestation of the whirlwind of fear, confusion, and tension that churned within her. Each thought of the current predicament sent fresh waves of cold disbelief through her veins. She wasn’t certain she’d have felt any better after the pressures of the gala. She’d dodged one bullet, only to have it replaced by a more lethal one.

She leaned forward to tug her shoes off her swollen feet. The large sapphire necklace still clasped around her neck swung forward, its weight suddenly like a noose around her neck.

She grabbed hold of it before she reached to unclasp it. As she settled back into the chair, too tired to shimmy out of the dress, she clutched it in her hand, a symbol of her luxurious new life.

Her fingers brushed the brass compass at her neck, a talisman from a simpler time. Days filled with genuine laughter and simple dreams contrasted starkly with her opulent yet hollow world.

Her eyes grew heavy when a soft knock startled her fully awake. “Yes?” she called out softly.

“Mrs. Harrington,” Worthington whispered as he stepped inside, “is there anything I can get you?”

She forced a smile onto her lips. “No, thank you, Worthington. I’m just going to change and go to bed.”

“Of course.” He hesitated, hovering at the door for a moment. “Ah, Mrs. Harrington…”

“Yes?” she asked.

“I would simply like to thank you for what you did tonight for Mr. Harrington.”

“Of course.” Her voice quavered, a reminder of how foreign the grand world of butlers and staff still was to her.

He returned her expression before he stepped toward the door.

“Oh, Worthington,” she said, crossing toward him. “The necklace. Here, I’d like to return it.”

He stared down at the blue jewel in her hand as she held it out to him before he shook his head. “There is nothing to return. It’s yours. There should be a jewelry box if you’d like to keep it there. If you prefer it in the safe, just let me know, and I will attend to it in the morning.”

Julia stood in stunned silence as the butler left her alone. She dangled the necklace from her fingers, the sapphire gleaming under the soft light, a tangible reminder of the life she’d stepped into. It had to cost a small fortune.

Her eyebrows flicked up. When you had unlimited money, she supposed it didn’t matter what things cost. She placed it in a drawer of the jewelry armoire against the wall before she changed out of her dress and into her pajamas. The difference in material starkly reminded her of the dual lives she currently led.

In the solitude of her opulent new home, she was merely Julia, but outside these walls, she played the role of Grant’s wife–a role becoming more and more difficult to manage. Had that been the only thing
